Annual Awards: Honoring Ashland's Changemakers

Each January, the Ashland City Council recognizes two outstanding individuals whose dedication and service have made a lasting impact on our community.

  • James M. Ragland “Volunteer Spirit” Community Service Award

This award honors exceptional volunteers who have made significant contributions to Ashland through public service. Established in 1994, it commemorates James M. Ragland, a visionary leader, Council President, and Planning Commissioner, whose volunteerism helped shape the character and beauty of Ashland.

Nomination Deadline: November 16, 2025
Community members are invited to submit nominations for the 2026 award. Nominees are evaluated based on:

    • The scope and length of their volunteer service
    • Prior recognition of their efforts
    • Dedication to volunteering beyond regular work responsibilities

Submit your nomination today at ashlandoregon.gov/AnnualAwards

  •  Alan C. Bates Public Service Award

Named in honor of Senator Alan C. Bates, this award celebrates individuals, whether citizens, City staff or elected officials, who champion the interests of Ashland and contribute meaningfully to public life.

Established in 2017, the award is presented annually based on nominations by City Council members and staff, with final selection by the Mayor. The inaugural recipient was Senator Bates himself, whose legacy of service continues to inspire.
