On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, the first-in-the-nation RecycleOn drop-off center/bin officially opened right here in Ashland! This groundbreaking site is part of Oregon’s new Recycling Modernization Act (RMA), which makes recycling easier, more effective and more fair. This program shifts the cost of recycling away from local governments and residents and places responsibility where it belongs: on the brands that make and sell packaging and paper products.
Councilor Derek Sherrell helped to kick things off with remarks before the ribbon cutting at the Ashland Recycling Center on Water Street, with Senator Jeff Golden also in attendance to mark this historic moment.

The new RecycleOn bin now accepts hard-to-recycle items like:
- Plastic bags & stretchy plastics
- Plastic lids
- Shredded paper
- Aluminum foil
- Plastic package handles (like 6-pack carriers)
- Plastic buckets and pails
This is just the first of 140+ centers planned across Oregon, and it’s a huge step forward for recycling nationwide.
